The Youngstown Glove Company Touchscreen Utility Gloves are tough, well-constructed, and very reasonably priced work gloves with relatively good conductivity.

Conductivity

These gloves are touchscreen compatible in the thumb, index and middle fingers.  While the synthetic leather used in these gloves conducts well, the wide, squared-off design of the fingertips makes precision an issue and they would benefit from a narrower, more tailored cut that is used in the non-conductive fingers. That said, these are utility gloves and therefore by nature will be bulkier than slim fit gloves made solely for warmth and/or fashion.

Construction

Youngstown has been making utility gloves since 2002 and their decade of experience is evident.  The construction of these unpretentious gloves is superb.  From the stitching to the materials the gloves look, feel and are robust.

Utility and Dexterity

Since Youngstowns makes work gloves, I’ve changed the ‘Warmth’ category (though they do provide some) to ‘Utility’ for this review.

I had a friend of mine who is a boilermaker try the Youngstown’s gloves out.  While he appreciated the sturdiness and construction of the gloves, he felt that the conductive fingertips of the gloves were a bit too wide and would be hard to use in the jobs he performs.  I agree that picking up small objects and performing precise tasks could be a challenge in these gloves.  I should note that I initially ordered a large and then downsized to a medium, which improved the manual dexterity and conductive properties a little bit.  Indeed, Youngstown suggests sizing down on their website.

Design

Youngstown has put a tremendous effort into the design of these gloves.  And while it is a complicated design with a lot of different materials and pieces, each detail appears to have been artfully placed for a genuine purpose.

The material varies for different parts of the hand with the palms being reinforced, a terry cloth brow wipe on the thumb, and fingers being enclosed by a combination of stretchy spandex/nylon sides and breathable polyurethane.  The knuckles have a light layer of extra padding and even the top of the velcro strap offers itself as a place to write your name for ease of identification at the work site.

As noted, however, the tips of the gloves are wider than necessary.  Also my fingers in the non-conductive fingers press flush against the tips, while the index and middle finger had room making it more difficult to interact with the touchscreen.

Overall Value and Conclusion

For their first time making touchscreen gloves, Youngstown has done a great job with their Youngstown Glove Company TouchScreen Utility Gloves. They already made excellent utility gloves and they are on the road to doing the same in the touchscreen market.  This is not to say, however, that there is not room for improvement.  A tailoring of the tips of the gloves would improve both the utility and the conductive aspects of the glove.  Additionally, while they have nylon protective pads on the palms of the gloves, they pads are a little bit slick and a touchscreen device could potentially slip out of the user’s hand.

About Youngstown Glove Company

Youngstown Glove Company manufactures durable performance work gloves. Founded in 2002, they aim for quality, innovation and customer satisfaction. At present, Youngstown makes nearly 40 performance work glove styles covering a broad range of applications and working conditions, including specialized styles such as: Cut-Resistant, Waterproof/Windproof, High Visibility and Anti-Vibration.

I reached out to Youngstown on several occasions to discuss their gloves, company and philosophy and was very impressed with the response I received.  The gentleman with whom I corresponded, a VP in sales and marketing, was generous with both his time and information.  Additionally, Youngstown stands behind all of their gloves and will replace your pair or work with you to match the right model to the job you’re doing.  I personally experienced this when one pair of gloves I purchased turned out to be a too big.  Without batting an eye, Youngstown allowed me return them for a pair one size down. This type of consideration, patience and generosity toward customers goes a long way.

I highly encourage contacting the company if you have any questions.
