The Youngstown Glove Company Military Work Gloves (MWG) TouchScreen Gloves are rugged touchscreen compatible gloves with sturdy construction and relatively good conductivity at a great price. And though they are made from a number of different materials and pieces, most every detail appears to have been thoughtfully placed for a genuine purpose.

Conductivity

The thumb, index, and middle finger of each hand of these gloves are conductive.  Similar to the Youngstown Touchscreen Utility Gloves, the synthetic leather used on the active fingertips conducts well, but the wide, squared-off design of the fingertips makes precision an issue.  As such, the conductive fingers could be improved by mimicking the the more tailored and focused cut used on the ring finger (and less so the pinky).

It should be noted that these are work/duty gloves and are therefore by nature bulkier than slimmer fit gloves made solely for warmth and/or fashion.

Construction

Youngstown has been making utility gloves since 2002 and their decade of experience is evident.  In short, the construction of these unpretentious gloves is superb.  From the stitching to the materials the gloves look, feel, and are, tough.

MWG gloves are advertised as being designed for the “rigors of non-combat military work,” but they could easily be used for any number of activities.  I personally used them when mountain biking  and they were terrific.  Not only did they breath well and protect my hands from several hours of intense handlebar vibration, but they also prevented severe cuts when I fell hands-first off my bike onto dirt and rocks.  Plus, as I was constantly stopping to take pictures with my touchscreen phone, it was great to not have to take my gloves off.

Utility and Dexterity

Since Youngstown Glove Co. makes work/utility gloves, I’ve changed the ‘Warmth’ category (though they do provide some) to ‘Utility’ for this review.

The sturdiness and construction are not to be disputed, however, as the conductive fingertips of the gloves are too wide, they make performing precise manual tasks difficult.  They were excellent for mountain biking, but I could imagine that for certain jobs, or had I needed to manipulate small parts on my bike, they might not perform as well.

The overall dexterity of the gloves are quite good, especially when one considers the sturdiness of their construction.

Design

Youngstown has put a tremendous amount of effort into the design of these gloves.  Though the MSG Touchscreen Gloves include a number of different materials and pieces, most every detail appears to have been thoughtfully placed for a genuine purpose.  This is something I really appreciate, as a lot of manufactures feel the need to look ‘high-tech’ or add needless ornamentation.  There’s no ‘art sauce’ here.

The material used for each area of the hand is different.  The palms combine polyurethane, nylon and silicon grip material to prevent dropping your touchscreen device (I am a huge fan of this feature), while the backs of the gloves are made of a more breathable combination of polyester and polyurethane. Additionally, there is a terry cloth brow wipe on the back of the thumb and fingers are enclosed on the sides by flexible spandex and nylon.  Finally, a reinforced saddle between the thumb and forefinger strengthens an oft-stressed area, and a Velcro strap enables users to easily secure or loosen the gloves.

As noted, however, the conductive tips of the gloves are wider than necessary.  Given the extreme attention to detail on every other area, the touchscreen compatible portions seem less well thought out.  As this is the first time they have made these gloves, this may simply be a question of experience, but does need improvement.

Overall Value and Conclusion

For their first time making touchscreen gloves, Youngstown has done a great job, and for $24.99, the Youngstown Glove Company Military Work Gloves (MWG) TouchScreen Gloves are extremely reasonably priced .  For utility/duty gloves these are the best I’ve come across thus far.  This is not to say, however, that there is no room for improvement.  A tailoring of the tips of the conductive fingers would improve both the utility as well as the the conductive functionality of the glove and make the MWGs truly superb.

About Youngstown Glove Company

Youngstown Glove Company manufactures durable performance work gloves. Founded in 2002, they aim for quality, innovation and customer satisfaction. At present, Youngstown makes nearly 40 performance work glove styles covering a broad range of applications and working conditions, including specialized styles such as: Cut-Resistant, Waterproof/Windproof, High Visibility and Anti-Vibration.

I reached out to Youngstown on several occasions to discuss their gloves, company and philosophy and was very impressed with the response I received.  The gentleman with whom I corresponded, a VP in sales and marketing, was generous with both his time and information.  Additionally, Youngstown stands behind all of their gloves and will replace your pair or work with you to match the right model to the job you’re doing.  I personally experienced this when one pair of gloves I purchased turned out to be a too big.  Without batting an eye, Youngstown allowed me return them for a pair one size down. This type of consideration, patience and generosity toward customers goes a long way.

I highly encourage contacting the company if you have any questions.
