The Outdoor Research Sensor Gloves are yet another superb product from a great company with a conscience.  If you are looking for some kick-ass winter gloves that are astonishingly well made and offer some of the best conductivity on the market, you should buy these.

These gloves conduct like Leonard Bernstein.

By using TouchTec, a patented nano-technology that gives touchscreen functionality to their leather, Outdoor Research (OR) has succeeded in making a warm winter glove that conducts with the precision and ease of much nimbler and thinner models.  Additionally, unlike many thicker winter gloves, which require the user to press relatively hard to make the connection between the finger, conductive material, and touchscreen, OR Sensor Gloves need nothing more than the lightest touch.  They are incredibly accurate and very easy to use.

I can’t say enough about this company and their products.  The construction is excellent.  All of the seams are tight and discrete, the materials are robust and durable, and the fit is snug and warm.  There are also useful clips on both hands which allow users to attach the gloves to each other and avoid losing one while the other is off.  Moreover, OR stands behind their work with OR’s Infinite Guarantee (i.e., they are guaranteed forever).

Warmth  and Dexterity

With wind-resistant, insulating fleece and TouchTec leather on the palm, the Sensor are made for cold weather adventure.  Despite their thicker, warmer profile, they are surprisingly easy to move in and since the conductive properties are so excellent, precision typing or navigation on a touchscreen is effortless.

For the most part I really like the design of the gloves.  However, there are a couple of areas where minor changes could mean large improvements.

First, the back of the gloves suffer from a slightly overdone logo and accompanying design made out of what appears to be silicon.  Interestingly, material would be much better placed on the palm of the hands since it acts as an astonishingly good traction/grip material.  I was able to hold my phone on the back of my hand just past an 85 degree angle before gravity finally pulled it off.  So while the TouchTec leather on the palm is nice, it’s unnecessary for operation of touchscreen devices and the design could be well served by having a more functional material in its place (which might also have the positive effect of reducing price).

Second, the pinky, ring, middle, and index fingers are tailored to be a bit narrower at the tips, while the thumb is not.  Although this (remarkably) does not inhibit the touchscreen capabilities of the thumb, for the purpose of utility (picking things up, pressing buttons, etc), functionality would be greatly improved if the thumb were trimmed in the same way.

Finally, and this is something I assume OR has no control over, the ‘TouchTec tag on the side of right glove is tacky.  While this is likely part of the agreement in using TouchTec’s leather, it’s a shame and TouchTec should do a better job to make tags to fit different products (i.e., classy and less intrusive).  These are relatively stylish and subtly attractive gloves, so the labels should reflect that.

Overall Value and Conclusion

The Outdoor Research Sensor Gloves are worth every penny, even at the $69.00 retail price.  If you want a killer winter gift for family, friends, colleagues, or yourself (which I would recommend personally), you should get these gloves.

About Outdoor Research

Outdoor Research (OR) began 27 years ago in Seattle, Washington. Today, as outdoor enthusiasts who practice what they preach, OR focuses on creating functional products for ‘human powered adventure’, much of which is informed by their legion of “Lab Rats” (users who give product feedback), who send their suggestions directly to their product development department.  I reached out to OR with a number of questions and found their staff/PR team to be open and responsive.  This company has a good soul, a positive message, and they care about what they do.

Beyond creating wonderful products in niche areas, OR stands behind their work with OR’s Infinite Guarantee.     Yes, that’s right, it’s guaranteed forever.
