Glove.ly has certainly upped their game with their 2013-14 line of merchandise, and the centerpiece of this year’s offerings is the new selection of leather touchscreen gloves.  Classically designed, comfortable, and reasonably priced, Glovely Men’s Leather Touchscreen Gloves are a home run for a young company (also available in women’s).

Conductivity

Of the scores of touchscreen glove materials we have tried, treated leather (often embedded with nano particles of conductive metals such as silver) ranks at the top for conductivity.  Glove.ly’s leather gloves are no exception.  Easy to use, incredibly responsive, and with full-glove conductivity, these gloves allow for multi-finger gestures, knuckle swipes while holding a drink, or any other move you can come up with while on the go and using your touchscreen device.

Construction

The construction of these gloves is excellent. Discrete seams and robust stitching ensure that the gloves will last, while the inside wool lining is firmly attached and well put together.  There was light pilling in the wool after wearing them for a couple of weeks, but barring using a less effective synthetic material, this is probably inevitable.

Warmth  and Dexterity

These gloves are focused on style over sub-zero warmth.  That said, if you are looking to supply your next off-piste adventure, you should be looking to other gloves anyway.  These are classic leather gloves that are as warm as you would expect them to be: they are fine for weather down to the high 30s (colder if you’re not going to be outside for prolonged periods of time) and are ideal for the commuter, driver, or walker about town.  The soft sheepskin leather and flexible wool lining allow users to move fingers and hands without hindrance, and because the material is so conductive, typing, swiping, and pinching on a touchscreen is accurate and easy.

It is also important to note that you should make sure to use the leather glove sizing chart! Leather gloves, unlike other types of gloves that can stretch a bit to accommodate different sized hands, are unforgiving in that respect.  If you have any questions, contact Glovely, as they are more than happy to help and explain.

Design

The gloves pay homage to a classic leather glove design.  On the top, three vertically stitched ridges move from the base of the fingers to the wrist, a time-honored feature that is familiar and attractive.  The seams are discrete and where you would expect to find them, and the sheepskin leather is buffed to a sheen between a matte and shine.  While I prefer a more matte glove, that is simply personal taste and certainly doesn’t detract from the design.

Less conventionally, though more interestingly, Glove.ly has incorporated their trademark magnetic connectors into the design of these gloves.  Unlike on their other gloves, instead of using their bright, cartoon-like logo patch to hold the magnets, this design opts for a much subtler leather cover of the same color with the company name simply and neatly imprinted into the sheepskin.  While the magnets are great for keeping your gloves together in a bag or briefcase, they are not strong enough to function reliably as clips on other gloves might.  In other words, you don’t want to leave one glove dangling from the other while you do something, as it will fall off fairly quickly.

One area where the design might be slightly improved is in the wrists.  Glove.ly chose to incorporate a pinched cuff with elastic inside that seems a touch out of place with the cleaner, straighter lines found throughout the rest of the gloves.  While this does make the glove more adaptable to different sized wrists, it seems to detract a little bit from the general aesthetic.  That said, as this element is only on the bottom side of the glove, most people seeing or wearing them probably won’t even notice.

Overall Value and Conclusion

The Glove.ly Leather Touchscreen Gloves are handsome sheepskin leather gloves with a classic look that won’t break your bank.  As the only full leather gloves that we are aware of to come in at under $100.00, these would be our choice in terms of price.

About Glove.ly

Founded in New York in 2011 by brothers Oscar and Sol Hedaya, Glove.ly aims to balance function, design, and technology.  The company is based on the principle that accessories can achieve this harmony in the same way that tech devices, Glove.ly’s gloves are designed around an active lifestyle: warm, yet lightweight; beautiful, yet functional; simple, yet great.  I’ve chatted over email with both Sol and Oscar and they are up front, enthusiastic, and a pleasure to deal with.  I would recommend reaching out to them if you have any questions, comments or concerns about their gloves.
